A border bridge in O'Rumduol border checkpoint in Phnom Preuk district of Battambang province, opposite Thailand's Chantaburi province, had been completed to service border trades between Cambodia and Thailand with money for the construction donated by local businesses, reports Radio Free Asia.
Mr. Suon Koeun, Governor of Phnom Preuk district, said the 7 metres by 20 metres bridge was constructed from concrete and paid for by local businesses, but refused to say how much it cost to construct.
However, many local people alleged that the bridge was constructed on Cambodian territory. "Cambodia has lost territory. Usually, (border bridges) are built in the middle of the river, but this bridge was not built in the middle of the river, but was built on the Cambodian side of the border", said a local resident.
Mr. Sieng Sout, Deputy Governor of Battambang province, said the construction of this bridge had been given the green light by the Cambodian Border Commission. "Not only at the provincial level, but we have also asked the national Border Commission and they came down to inspect the place. The provincial authority dare not decide by itself", he said.
Mr. Var Kimhong, chairman of Cambodian Border Commission, said he gave the authorisation to construct the bridge but directed the local authority to study the borderline and consult with the Thai authority so that the construction of the bridge will not violate any country's sovereignty.
