About 40 foreign journalists covering the 1970s' Cambodian civil war have arrived in Cambodia yesterday for a reunion to commemorate their colleagues who were killed covering the Cambodian civil war from 1970-1975, reports Radio France Internationale.
Twenty-seven (DAP News put the number at 40) veteran foreign journalists have arrived on Tuesday and immediately they were hosted a dinner by Information Minister Khieu Kanharith. The veteran journalists, all aged over 60, mostly came from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. They worked as correspondents for major news agency like Associated Press, Reuters, United Press International, Washington Post and Newsweek.
These foreign veteran journalists planned to stay 4 days in Cambodia in which they will also have a joint dinner with local Cambodian journalists and a visit on Thursday 22nd to Wat Po Pagoda in Borset district in Kampong Speu province where 9 journalists were surrounded and killed on 31st May in 1971 by the Khmer Rouge forces. In the afternoon, they will return to Phnom Penh where they will hold a commemoration service in a garden in front of Hotel Le Royale, where many foreign journalists were based during the war which was then known as Hotel Le Phnom from 1970-75. The Cambodian government said that it had planned to build a memorial at the spot to honour the journalists killed during the 1970s war.
These journalists, some who have never returned to Cambodia since they fled in 1975, will be taken to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Killing Fields Memorial and the Royal Palace.
