Leaders of teachers and trades unions planned to screen a documentary about the assassination of trades union leader Chea Vichea who was gunned down in broad daylight six years ago, reports Cambodian Express News.

The documentary "Who killed Chea Vichea?", was filmed and made by Mr. Bradley Cox, who was the first to be on the scene of the assassination. He had interviewed an extensive range of people and witnesses for the last six year which formed part of the documentary.

The Federation of Cambodian Unions on 26th April wrote a letter to the Governor of Phnom Penh asking for a permission to screen the documentary free of charge to the public on International Labour Day on 1st of May at a location west of Wat Langka, the spot where Chea Vichea was shot dead on 22nd January 2004.

Mr. Rong Chhun, chairman of the Federation of Cambodian Unions and president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Union, said the purpose of the free and public screening of the documentary was to allow teachers, workers, the people and the general public to see the documentary and form an opinion by themselves as to who was/were the killer(s) of Mr. Chea Vichea.

Mr. Rong Chhun said the International Labour Day is an appropriate day for the screening of a documentary about the murder of one of Cambodia's best and bravest union leaders. He said it is a good occasion to pressure the government to find and unmask the real killers.

Immediately after the high-profile murder, Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun were arrested, but Mr. Rong Chhun and other leaders of civil society such as Dr. Pung Chiv Kek said that they were scapegoats and fake killers fabricated by the government. Mrs. Pung Chiv Kek, director of human rights group Licadho, said she wants to see the documentary screened to the public to allow possible witnesses to help the authority to identify and arrest the real killers.

Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit, warned Mr. Rong Chhun not to cause anarchy and not to try to politicse Mr. Chea vichea's murder for political reasons. Mr. Tith Sothea said the documentary must be submitted to the Interior Ministry for examination first to see if it contains scenes and material that may cause and lead to (political) turmoil. However, he said that the authority had not closed the investigation and the case of Mr. Chea Vichea's murder yet.
