Khmer Machas Srok newspaper, the Sam Rainsy Party-affiliated newspaper whose editor-in-Chief and publisher Hang Chakra, was jailed for allegedly defaming Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, has reportedly suspended its publications for over a week already due to financial difficulties, reports Radio France Internationale.
Mr.Chum Sophal, editor of Khmer Machas Srok, said the newspaper suspended its publications since 2nd April and doesn't know when it will be republished. He added that the newspaper management is waiting for Mr. Hang Chakra's decision when he will be pardoned by the king and released from prison on the Khmer New Year's Day (13th Arpil).
The fledgeling newspaper was in financial trouble since Mr. Hang Chakra's incarceration in mid 2009 for publishing articles exposing corruption committed by officials working under Deputy Prime Minister Sok An.
Khmer Machas Srok has been financed by contributions from members of parliament from the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP). Mr. Chum Sophal said running and publication costs of Khmer Machas Srok, which has a circulation of 1,000 issues daily, reached $1,000 per month. It is not sure if the financial difficulties Khmer Machas Srok faced is caused by the suspension of contributions from the SRP's MPs or as a result of drops in sales.
Currently, there are two newspapers, Khmer Machas Srok and Moneaksekar Khmer, that support the oppsotion Sam Rainsy Party. With the suspension of publications by Khmer Machas Srok, only one opposition-affilaited will be in publication.
