An official of the Justice Ministry said Hang Chakra, the editor-in-chief of the opposition-affiliated Khmer Machas Srok newspaper, could be released before the Khmer New Year which falls on 13th of April, reports Deum Ampil.

Mr. Hang Chakra was sentenced to 12 months jail and fined 9 million riels ($2500) on 26th June 2009 for defaming Deputy Prime Minister Sok An after he published a series of articles accusing officials working under Mr. Sok An of involving in rampant corruption.

Minister of Justice Ang Vong Wattana could not be reached for comments and Mr. Choung Chou-Ngy, Mr. Chakra's defence lawyer, said he has not yet received any official confirmation of the imminent release of his client.

Earlier this month, Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith told the media that the plaintiff, Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, has agreed to withdraw the lawsuit which could pave the way for Hang Chakra's release from prison.
