A Cameroonian national has been detained by Thai Customs Officials, at the Cambodian border, attempting to transport a substantial amount of gold into the Kingdom without the required documentation.

Pattaya Daily News

Sa Kaeo - the 9th of April 2010 : The Cameroonian national, Mr. Milol Francis, 35, was detained at the Aranyaprathet border crossing after Thai Customs Officials deemed him suspicious.

Whilst carrying a wheel suitcase over the border, customs officers asked Mr. Francis to open his luggage so that a standard search could be performed, following which an amount of 1.25kgs of Cambodian gold was found without the necessary legal documentation.

The gold, found packed into a plastic bag and concealed at the bottom of the suitcase is alleged to have been illegally smuggled from various Cambodian gold mines, later being sold on to Mr. Francis in Phnom Penh.

Mr. Francis has since confessed to having purchased the undocumented precious metal at a cost of US$2,000. He explained that he intended to transport the gold back to his home country of Cameroon for sale purposes.

Thai Customs Officials have subsequently seized the gold and will now take legal action against Mr. Francis over the matter.
