14 heavily-armed Thai troops have moved in to occupy an area on top of Phnom Trop mountain and refused to withdraw, saying that it is a disputed area and therefore they have the rights to stay there, reports Deum Ampil.
Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for Cambodian Defence Ministry, said those 14 Thai troops moved in to occupy the area since 4pm on Friday, the 16th, when the Cambodian troops were preparing to celebrate the Khmer New Year. He said both sides have held talks. "Our top commanders have held talks with commander of the Thai Military Region Two led by Gen. Wiwalit Chornsamrith to demand that those Thai soldiers withdraw from Cambodian territories to make the areas return back to the pre-15th July 2008 situations", he said referring to the event on 15th July 2008 when Thai troops invaded the Preah Vihear areas.
As of Saturday, the 17th, those 14 Thai troops still refused to withdraw from the area saying that it is a disputed zone and therefore they have the rights to stay there. Today, the 18th, Cambodian commanders from the Military Region 4 will hold another talk with the Thai side to ask them to withdraw those 14 soldiers from the area.
On Saturday, Cambodian and Thai troops have clashed twice near O'Smach border town in Oddar Meanchey province after Thai troops reportedly entered Cambodian territory to evict Khmer villagers from the area saying they have built their houses on Thai soil. Cambodian side said a number of Thai soldiers were injured and killed. The Thai side said one of its rangers (border soldiers) had been missing.
