HRP asks politicians to consider national interests over personal interests

The Human Rights Party (HRP) has issued a statement in light of media accusations that it attempted to block the anti-corruption laws from being adopted, reports Radio Free Asia.

The HRP boycotted the parliamentary debates on anti-corruption laws because it said the laws didn't go far enough and because the draft bill was only given to lawmakers 5 days before it was due to be debated in the parliament. HRP boycotted the parliamentary session because it said 5 days is not enough for MPs to review and examine the laws.

In a statement released on 10th March, the same day as the anti-corruption laws being debated in the parliament, the HRP said that it wants good and effective anti-corruption laws that can punish corrupt officials and make them repay their stolen wealth back to the nation.

The statment said that the reason it requested for a 2 week delay in the debates of the laws doesn't mean it didn't want the laws to be adopted, but it wants to give more time to MPs to review and examine the laws. The statement categorically denies the ruling Cambodian People's Party-affiliated media's accusations that it didn't want any anti-corruption laws for the country.
