King Norodom Sihamoni will leave Cambodia today (22nd Feb) for a medical check up in China where he is scheduled to have the check up once every 6 months, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mr. Oum Daravuth, chief of the king's cabinet, said the king will initially travel to Beijing and have his medical check up before travelling to France to receive an honour conferred to him by the Academie Francais (French Academy). He said this is the highest honour for the Cambodian king because the Academie Francais only has 40 members appointed from a wide range of prominnent people from the around the world.

Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, said the king's departure should not be a surprise to anyone. "The king's departure to Beijing should not be a surprise because it is a routine departure and we are also very excited and honoured about his new appointment (as a member of the Academie Francais) in France because he is our king", he said.

Mr. Son Chhay, MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said the king's departure should be a concern. "His departure makes all of his subjects fell very concerned because he is our shade (things that make people feel comfortable) and we wish he will fulfill his overseas mission as quickly as possible and return back to the country", he said.

In the past, when ex-king Sihanouk left the country for a medical chek up in China, political observers are always suspicious that he left the country because of his tensions with the country's political leaders or because of his displeasure with political developments inside the country.
