The Cambodia Watchdog Council has accused the government of ignoring the concerns of border issues from civil society and opposition politicians, reports Radio Free Asia.
In its statement released on 23rd February, CWC said the government are afraid to recognise and acknowledge the truth about border violations by Cambodia's neighbours by trying to silence oppositions and critics through legal actions.
Mr. Rong Chhun, chairman of CWC who was jailed in 2005 for his criticism of the government's border policies, said border encroachments by Cambodian neighbours are real. "The witnesses are those people who live in the villages who had all heard and seen that they have lost their farmlands because of the border demarcation works. And what the Sam Rainsy Party has proposed, as well as the issues raised by Mr. Sam Rainsy, are real and true. And they want the government as well as the Cambodian Border Committee to re-examine all the border documents presented by Mr. Sam Rainsy", he said.
Mr. Sam Rainsy had released a series of documents showing border encroachments by Vietnam. But the government and Cambodian Border Committee chairman Var Kimhong accused Mr. Sam Rainsy of fabricating the documents. "His Excellency Sam Rainsy and his clique, again and again, never pay attention to the explanations of the government, either through roundtable or square table (meeting), he never listen to us and still continue to accuse us (of allowing border encroachments). This is high treason that the government will continue to sue His Excellency on charges of faking public documents", said Mr. Var Kimhong.
CWC appeals to the government to stop using legal actions and jail terms against border critics and concentrate on the protection of Cambodia's borders.
