Taipei, Jan. 5 (CNA) The Taiwan Directorate General of Highways (DGH) is setting up exam systems in up to 10 languages for the convenience of foreign nationals to get a car driver's license.

There are about 300,000 "new settlers" in Taiwan - overseas citizens who have relocated to Taiwan due to marriage or work, according to government statistics.

For those foreign spouses or workers who sit written tests for a car driver's license, they would have test sheets in eight languages to choose from, DGH officials said.

The test sheets, when they are available from April 1, would come in Mandarin Chinese, English, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, Cambodian and Burmese, DGH officials said.

Online tests will also be available at some motor vehicles offices islandwide, in 10 languages, namely Mandarin, Hoklo (Taiwanese), Hakka, English, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, Cambodian and Burmese, they added.

Meanwhile, the DGH has also completed a new question bank for the driver's license exam, with 1,457 questions in total, representing a nearly 49 percent increase over the old question bank, the officials said.
