Supporters and members of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) are collecting thumbprints and signatures to present to King Sihamoni to intervene for all charges to be dropped against opposition leader Sam Rainsy who are charged with sabotage of uprooting border markers, reports everyday.com.
Mr. Yim Sovan (pictured), spokesman for the SRP, said party supporters from all provinces are collecting thumbprints and signatures for the king's intervention. He told Radio Free Asia on 11th January that the petition will be presented to the king in the not too distant future. "We depend our hope on the king and we respect the king. So, we are asking for the king's intervention to resolve the issue. (Rainsy) is innocent. This is not about asking for a royal pardon, I wish to state this very clearly", he said.
Radio Free Asia reported on Tuesday that, so far, the SRP has collected 20,000 thumbprints and signatures to present to the king and the National Assembly for intervention. Mr. Sam Rainsy's lawyer, Mr. Choung Chou-Ngy, claimed that the Svay Rieng Provincial Court plans to convict and sentence Mr. Rainsy in absentia on 27th January.
