The Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has collected 20,000 thumbprints and signatures to present to King Sihamoni and the parliament to ask them to intervene for all charges against its president, Mr. Sam Rainsy, to be dropped, reports Radio Free Asia.
Mr. Sam Rainsy (pictured) has been charged with sabotage and destruction of public properties for leading 100 villagers to uproot six wooden border markers on the Khmer-Vietnamese borders on 25th October, 2009. Mr. Sam Rainsy has fled to France and the arrest warrant for his arrest has been issued for failing to appear before the court.
Mr. Ho Vann, SRP MP for Phnom Penh, said the petition is not asking the king to grant a royal pardon to Mr. Sam rainsy because he hasn't been convicted by the court yet. It is only asking the king to intervene for all charges to be dropped, he said.
Mr. Cheam Yiep, an MP from the ruling Cambodian People's Party, said the petition is inappropriate because only the plaintiff, Svay Rieng Provincial Court, can drop all charges against Mr. Sam Rainsy.
Mr. Choung Chou-Ngy, Mr. Rainsy's lawyer, said the Svay Rieng Court plans to sentence Mr. Sam Rainsy in absentia on 27th January.
Mr. Sam Rainsy, who is currently in exile in France, said he will return to appear in court only if the government agrees to release to the two arrested farmers and return their farmlands to them first. "I will go (to court). I want the court to judge me however it wanted, but before I returned to be judged, I request they release the two jailed farmers first. And after they are released, I ask the authority to return their farmlands. They have to resolve the issue the farmers faced first, because this is not Sam Rainsy's problems. It is the issue if farmers becoming victims because of injustices. After they are released and their lands returned to them, I will return to let them do whatever they wanted with me", Mr. Rainsy said.
Two farmers, Mrs. Meas Srey and Mr. Prum Chea, owners of the lands allegedly encroached by the new wooden border markers, were arrested after they appeared in court a few weeks ago. Twenty-five SRP MPs plan to visit them in jail on 19th of January.

dont depend on the king kong, it's just a midget gorilla awatting for get fed everyday, he never has a last word. all we can expect is the khmer judges should know that sam rainsy is not a criminal. his sentence should be none and clear. khmer judges already have had a superbad reputation with its own laws, this time, their opportunity to clean up their mess.
Let's be trutfully honest here. Sam Rainsy has had and still has a reputation of running away from the country whenever he did a political gaffe, just like Norodom Ranariddh in the past. These people are simply not true blue politicians per se as they acted mostly emmotionally in politics and one has to be real cool head in any meaningful political deed. Not that I am a CPP supporter but perhaps with Sam Rainsy out of the picture for a good while, the various Opposition clans could do something more sensible and find ways to mount a common platform and candidacy list and provide good alternatives/solutions to any problems they raised in Parliament instead of opening their mouth in endless criticism without offering true solution. This is what I call a true blue Opposition, so get your acts together and show your voters what capability you may have

6:54 PM, well, if Ranariddh didn't run away in 1997, he would have been tortured, his eyes gouged out and executed like Kruoch Yoeum, Chao Sambath and Ho Sok.
Rainsy nearly got killed during grenade attacks in 1997 and many times afterward that were ordered by Hun Sen. So, here we are dealing with a ruthless ex-Khmer Rouge Hun Sen. Rainsy has to run for his life, if not he can be killed.
You mean the true blue politicians are those ruthless criminal killers like Hun Sen?
I don't approve of Rainsy running away if we are dealing with sensible people. But here we are dealing with merciless and ruthless ruler Hun Sen. So Rainsy has to save his life first.
