The opposition Sam Rainsy Party has on 23rd January sought intervention from UN Human Rights Special Envoy to Cambodia, Prof. Surya Subedi, to intervene in the case of opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who is facing arrest on charges of sabotage and destruction of public property for leading villagers to uproot 6 wooden border markers from the Khmer-Vietnamese borders on 25th October 2009, reports RFA.
The request for an intervention was made during a two-hour meeting between the UN Envoy and SRP officials on 23rd January. The Svay Rieng Court is scheduled to sentence Mr. Sam Rainsy in absentia on 27th January.
Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the SRP, said the UN Envoy has asked the party to present him a detailed report and evidence for him to study the case. "He pays very special attention to the case and he requested the SRP to prepare a report and present to him all evidences that we have collected so that he has all the documents for him to make a proper judgement on this case. And he has assured us that he will seek means to ensure that the court case will provide justice to the people", he said.
When asked by reporters what he think about the Svay Rieng Court's case against Sam Rainsy, Prof. Subedi responded only that it is a court's matter. "I'm sorry. I don't want to talk about any individual's case. That (Rainsy) case is a matter for the court but I will monitor to ensure that the upcoming court hearing will be fair and just. In general, I am coming here to evaluate the indepedence and justice in the Cambodian judicial system and other issues", he said.
Prof. Subedi is in Cambodia from 18-30 January to evaluate human rights situations in Cambodia, including democracy, the independence and justice of the Cambodian judicial system. He has met with senior government officials, including PM Hun Sen, before meeting with the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and the Human Rights Party.

the usual answers from the UN. just like during the khmer rouge days. they never show up their face when yuon kill our people. now when peace and stability are proper, they come to stir problems. these borders with the yuon is not going to help by the UN. fuck the UN.
Most rapporteurs would do the same thing by not direct answering to any questions being asked as this would not help their purposes of the visit (in order to have any coordinations and cooperations of the host country) but what they are reporting to their superior is based on self-judment and the superior would then interpret it.
UN officials are like diplomats. They answered questions diplomatically. Subedi cannot can answer directly or will be accused of supporting the opposition against the government. But just read what he said carefully. He said "I am coming here to evaluate the independence and justice in the Cambodian judicial system and other issues". In other word, he come here to also monitor Rainsy's court case.
