SRP hopes its request to visit jailed farmers will be granted

The Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) hopes that its request to visit the two farmers jailed in Svay Rieng Prison will be granted, reports Deum Ampil.

The two jailed farmers, Mrs Meas Srey and Mr. Prum Chea, were arrested and jailed on 22nd December 2009 after apearing in court on charges of uprooting border markers from their rice fields on 25th October 2009. Opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who is currently staying in France, has refused to attend the court hearing and two other farmers have gone into hiding.

A week ago, 26 MPs from the SRP wrote a letter to the Interior Ministry seeking permission to visit the two jailed farmers. That request was rejected by the Interior Ministry and it recommended the SRP's MPs to directly seek permission with the Svay Rieng Prison authority.

On Friday 15th January, a similar letter was sent to the Svay Rieng Prison authority. Mr. Ho Van (pictured), SRP MP from Phnom Penh, said he has high hope that the permission will be granted. He said every Cambodian citizen has the rights, guarranteed by the constitution, to visit prisoners in jails. He added that the two farmers had not committed any serious crimes, just uprooted temporary border markers which were planted in the middle of their rice fields.

The SRP MPs said that this is routine and normal visit. The Svay Rieng Police commissioner, Mr. Prach Sim, however, disagreed and said that the SRP MPs have the past caused severe headaches to the Svay Rieng authority.
