The Sam Rainsy Party-affiliated Moneaksekar Khmer newspaper (pictured) has received permit from the Ministry of Information to republish after 8 months of self-imposed closure after its editor, Dam Sith, faced a series of serious lawsuits from the government and Prime Minister Hun Sen, reports Khmer Express News.

The permit was signed by Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith on Thursday 21st January. The permit was granted after Mr. Dam Sith wrote a letter to the Ministry of Information on 19th January requesting to republish the newspaper.

Moneaksekar Khmer (Khmer Conscience) was established in 1994 and was a critical voice of the ruling Cambodian People's Party and an ardent supporter of the Sam rainsy Party. In 2008, it faced 18 lawsuits lodged by the government and it went into volunatry closure on 8th July 2009 after Prime Minister Hun Sen lodged a lawsuit against its editor, Mr. Dam Sith. Mr. Dam Sith wrote a letter of apology to Mr. Hun Sen and at the same time promises to close his newspaper in exchange for Mr. Hun Sen to drop the lawsuit and forgive him.

This is good news if Dam Sith maintain the same political stance. But I fear that the reasons the CPP government re-issue a permit to Dam Sith to republish Moneaksekar Khmer because it has already secured Dam Sith's allegiance. I hope the newspaper will still serve democracy, not dictatorship of Hun Sen's government.
