Extradition pact with UAE 'this year'

Thaksin as Cambodian economic advisor.

Thailand's extradition agreement with the United Arab Emirates should be completed this year, allowing the government to bring fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to justice, Vice Foreign Minister Panich Vikitsreth said yesterday.

He said representatives from the two countries had made some progress in the negotiations that began on Sunday and ended yesterday in the UAE, but a few more rounds of talks were needed before the deal could be concluded.

"I expect the agreement to be concluded within this year," Panich said, adding that the treaty was not solely aimed at Thaksin.

The next round of negotiations is expected to take place in Thailand in a couple of months.

Deputy Attorney-General Thaworn Panichphan said the extradition treaty with the UAE would be similar to accords Thailand has signed with other countries and would also be applied to cases other than Thaksin's.

The government failed several times last year to bring the ex-PM back to face the two-year jail sentence he was given for letting his former wife, Pojaman Damaphong, buy a plot of state-owned land in Bangkok.

Thaksin reportedly lives in Dubai, though UAE authorities deny any knowledge of his presence in the Gulf state.

The government has, however, discovered that extradition deals do not always work, as it failed to snare Thaksin when he was in Cambodia. Despite a bilateral extradition treaty, Phnom Penh rejected Thailand's request on grounds that Thaksin's case was politically motivated.
