The Cambodian Watchdog Council (CWC) has released a statement on Monday declaring its support for Mr. Sam Rainsy's action on Cambodian border issues with Vietnam, reports Deum Ampil.

The statement, signed by Mr. Rong Chhun (pictured), chairman of CWC, said Mr. Sam Rainsy's action in uprooting 6 wooden border markers on 25th October 2009 was not wrong and did not violate any laws as he did it to protect Cambodian territorial integrity. "Mr. Sam Rainsy's action in uprooting the border markers was an action for the protection of Cambodian territorial integrity in fulfilling his duty as a member of parliament. Charges levelled against Mr. Sam Rainsy and the arrests and jailing of two villagers was politically-charged and an injustice", the statement said.

The statement added that every measure taken by the Svay Rieng Provincial Court was taken to please a foreign country which has no will to get involved in the defence of Cambodian national territorial integrity. The statement has also called on the Svay Rieng Court to drop all charges against Mr. Rainsy and release the two villagers from prison unconditionally.

Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, said Mr. Sam Rainsy's action was wrong and that the request for all charges to be dropped against him is inappropriate. "This is an inappropriate request or demand because His Excellency Sam Rainsy has violated the laws in the destruction of the border markers which is a joint efforts by both Cambodia and Vietnam to demarcate the borders", he said.

On Sunday, Mr. Sam Rainsy has posted on his party's website what he called irrefuttable evidences of Vietnam's encroachments of Cambodian territories, including pictures and maps drawn by the U.S Army and the French government.

Last week, the Sam Rainsy Party and the Human Rights Party had issued a joint statement under the banner of the Democratic Change for Democracy alliance stating its support for Mr. Sam Rainsy's action in uprooting border marker number 185, which it claimed was planted inside Khmer territory.
