Five Khmer Krom Buddhist monks have gone into hiding after Interior Ministry Police seeks their arrests for allegedly distributing leaflets attacking 7th January Day, reports Radio Free Asia.

7th January Day is the day that the Vietnamese army had toppled the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. The ruling Cambodian People Party glorifies it as a liberation day, while critics and opposition parties consider it an invasion day.

Ven. Liv Phally, who has gone into hiding since 7th January, denied any involvements with the leaflets. "I did not distribute any leaflets and I didn't even know the contents of the leaflets", he told RFA.

Ven. Thach Danh, another monk in hiding, said he is living in fears. "I do not have anywhere to stay. I went to Saravon Pagoda and they refused to let me stay and Samakki Pagoda had also refused to let me stay. I am very scared about what the government had done to us", he said.

When asked whether he had distributed the anti-7th January Day leaflets, he said: "No, it is not true".

Gen. Touch Naroth, Phnom Penh Police Chief, refused to comment on the matter when reached by phone. Gen. Khieu Sopheak, Interior Ministry spokesman, said he was unaware of the case.

Mr. Thach Setha, president of the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association in Cambodia, appealed to the authority to investigation the matter thoroughly in order to avoid punishing the innocent people. "I appeal to the government to do a thorough investigation in order to avoid chaos and punishing innocent people that will create fears among the monks, espcially the Khmer Krom Buddhist monk community. I don't wish to see such a thing happening", he said.

The authority claimed to know all the identities of all the 5 monks.

Khmer Krom are persecuted by the Vietnamese government and persecuted by the Khmer government. So, where can they go? They are considered Khmers by the Viet and considered as Viet by the Khmer government. Sad really.
