Cambodia is to increase its rice exports significantly and will become a real exporter of rice in 2010, reports Reaksmei Kampuchea.

Mr. Ny Ly Heng, chairman of the rice exporting company Baitong PLc, said in 2010 Cambodia, has the capacity to export between 500,000 to 700,000 tons of rice to international markets.

Mr. Ly Heng said Cambodia has just secured export markets in Australia, Europe, the United States and Africa. He said, for high grade rice, Cambodian exporters can secure prices ranging from $700-$880 per ton. He said, currently, there 6 companies which have the permits and capacity to export rice and that his Baitong PLc company has exported 200,000 tons of rice last year.

In 2009, Cambodia announced it has 2 million tons of rice surplus for exports, but there is no statistics to indicate how much unhusked or husked rice cambodia has exported in 2009.
