SRP MPs denied access to visit border pillar number 185

By Khmerization

Twenty members of parliament from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party had visited the Khmer-Vietnamese border areas on 14th December, but were denied access to visit the contentious border pillar number 185, the spot where party president Sam Rainsy had led the villagers to uproot six wooden demarcation poles they accused of illegally installed by Vietnam, reports Deum Ampil.

Deum Ampil reports that the Svay Rieng provincial authority prevented the SRP MPs from visiting border pillar number 185 because it said the spot involved a contentious legal case against Mr. Sam Rainsy.

Deum Ampil reported that, according to its field reporter who accompanied the MP delegation, it is not sure what those MPs will do next after the access denial.

However, in an email to Khmerization, MP Mu Sochua wrote that the trip was a success. "It was a very successful day. The (border) posts are for sure on Khmer soil", she wrote. She further wrote that many villagers who lost their lands through border encroachments by Vietnam have cried for help. "You should hear the cries of our people who have lost their land. They have nothing left", she added.

According to the photos of the MPs' visit to the border areas sent to Khmerization, the provincial authority as well as the Vietnamese authority had deployed a large number of security forces to block the MPs access to "forbidden areas" along the borders.
