Sam Rainsy refuses to appear before the court, calling it a kangaroo court

By Khmerization

Mr. Kong Korm (pictured), vice-president of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) told reporters that opposition leader Sam Rainsy will not appear before the Svay Rieng provincial court as summoned because he considered it a kangaroo court that will not render justice to him, reports Deum Ampil.

Mr. Sam Rainsy, who is currently living in Europe, has been summoned to appear before the court on charges of sabotage and destruction of public property after he led a group of 100 villagers to uproot six border poles on Khmer-Vietnamese borders on 25th October, 2009.

Mr. Kong Korm said his leader has done nothing wrong. "He (Rainsy) will not appear before the court as summoned because he is innocent. The summon for him or for the villagers to appear before the court was done by the order of the Vietnamese Prime Minister, so it is unjust and illogical. Vietnam seems to want to encroach on our territories, but we want to protect our farmlands. The Cambodian leadership and the Cambodian court should not serve Vietnam's interests", said Mr. Kong Korm.

Mr. Prach Sim, Svay Rieng Provincial Police Commissioner, said the reason Mr. Sam Rainsy refused to attend the court hearing means that is he afraid of the court. He added that under legal principles, if Mr. Rainsy fails to appear before the court as summoned, he will be issued with another summon. "If he fails to appear before the court this time, the court will issue another summon, that means an arrest warrant", he said.

Two villagers, owners of the farmlands allegedly encroached by the new border poles, had been arrested after they appeared in court in relations to the border incident and two more are still on the run after an arrrest warrant was issued against them.
