The captain of a poaching vessel attempted to escape border guards by scuttling his ship, the sakhalin.info news portal has said.
The vessel, flying a Cambodian flag, entered Russian territorial waters to receive a load of poached seafood and to deliver it to Japan. Border guards noticed the ship loaded with shrimp and sea urchins in the early hours of Wednesday.
The captain was ordered to stop but instead headed toward Japanese territorial waters.
"Having realized that he was unable to escape the border guards, the vessel's captain, Sergei Tolkachev... attempted to scuttle the ship," the news portal said.
The captain opened the ship's Kingston valves, allowing seawater to enter its tanks, and directed the vessel to a group of small islands. He was the first one to leave the ship on an inflatable raft, the crew had to save themselves by jumping into the water.
Border guards, however, arrived at the sinking vessel on time and rescued the ship and the crew.
