The Banteay Meanchey provincial authority has reportedly prevented Cambodian rice traders from exporting rice across the borders to Thailand without any clear reasons, reports Deum Ampil.
300 tons of rice in 30 trucks are waiting to cross the borders at Thmor Puok district on the morning of Friday 11th December after border authority banned them from crossing the borders.
Mr. Chhuong Sun Im, a rice trader, said he and his fellow small traders are not happy with the local authority's ban without clear reasons. "We are protesting to request them to allow us to export rice to Thailand because over there they offer us better prices than inside Cambodia", he said.
Mr. Him Khor Tean, Cambodian Centre for Agricultural Studies and Development (CEDAC), said it is a good thing to control the flows of Cambodian rice to neighbouring countries to protect Cambodia's interests.
Mr. Oung Oeun, Governor of Banteay Meanchey, said the ban was to encourage Cambodian farmers and rice traders to sell their products locally and he promised to offer similar price or better prices than the Thai traders.
At the time of this article going to press, the Banteay Meanchey has still not allowed those trucks at Thmor Puok to cross the borders.
