24 Khmer Krom asylum-seekers had been arrested by Thai police in Bangkok on 2nd December and will be repatriated to Cambodia very soon, reports Radio free Asia.
Mr. Thach Ngoc Thach, president of the U.S-based World Khmer Kampuchea Krom Federation, said there were 16 adults and 8 children among the arrestees. He said the 24 Khmer Krom were being persecuted by the Vietnamese authority and were seeking political asylum in Bangkok. He said that they were awaiting interviews by UNHCR officials to determine their status when they were arrested by the Thai police. He added that those 24 Khmer Krom will be repatriated to Cambodia on Saturday 5th December.
Mr. Thach Ngoc Thach appealed to Cambodian government, local and international NGOs to help look after and protect those aslum-seekers from political persecutions.
