Opinions surrounding the lifting of Mr. Sam Rainsy's immunity

By Khmerization

Many Cambodians, from civil society to students, are expressing different opinions regarding the lifting of opposition leader Sam Rainsy's parliamentary immunity on charges of "destruction of public property" after he had led 100 villagers to uproot six border poles on Khmer-Vietnam borders on 25th October, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mr. Rong Chhun, president of Cambodian Independent Teachers Association, said: "(The government) dare not admit the truth, so it put all the burdens (blames) on Mr. Sam Rainsy, it is an injustice. This action (of lifting Mr. Rainsy's immunity) is an action to please a neighbouring country and in the name of a government of an independent country, it should not receive a political influence from a neighbouring country tnd to put all the burdens on all Cambodian citizens and their members of parliament."

Mr. Our Virak, chairman of Cambodian Centre for Human Rights, said: "Our country still like to use coerced and dictatorial powers and like to threaten other people, especially opposition parties. In this case, we see that it is not right, it is not a case that warrant such punishment (lifting of immunity). But I see that the ruling Cambodian People's Party seem willing to show its powers."

Mr. Yim Sovan, Sam Rainsy Party spokesman, said: "This shows clearly that the Cambodian government follows the orders from the Vietnamese government. On 4th of November 2009, Vietnam's PM, Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung, has requested the Cambodian government to take action against MP Sam Rainsy in relations to his uprooting of border poles in the middle of Cambodian farmers' rice-fields. And added further that this sort of action should not be allowed to happen again."

Mr. Cheam Yeap, speaking on behalf of the Cambodian government, denied Mr. Yim Sovan's accusations and said the parliament's action was done in accordance with the request of the Svay Rieng Provincial Court.

A Phnom Penh resident was upset with the lifting of Mr. Sam Rainsy's parliamentary immunity. He said: "The lifting (of Rainsy's immunity) is not right because his action was not to serve the Vietnamese interests. I am very hurt. I am just an ordinary citizen and I have come today to demand the parliament not to lift Mr. Rainsy's immunity."

Saravuth, a student, said: "We must study the borders first before we decided to uproot the border poles. Maybe what he (Mr. Rainsy) had done was right, but we must conduct study for sometimes first (before we decided to uproot the poles)."

Sim Sophorn said: "I wish that our country does not have any problems where Mr. Rainsy uprooted the border poles. I ask the parliament and the government to go and do investigations on the grounds to see whether the border poles were really planted in the middle of villagers rice-fields or not."

Mr. Cheam Yeap said this is not the job of the parliament. It is the responsibility of the government.

Mr. Kem Sokha, president of the small Human Right Party, said: "I think that this is a threat in the interior of our country to intimidate all patriots from raising the issues that the government does not like them to raise because they are afraid that when the people know about them and so they will lose their popularity."

Mr. Rainsy has still not returned to Cambodia yet after his parliamentary immunity has been lifted on 16th November.

This is the job of the provincial leaders where the poles were planted and a serious invistigation by the natioanal government. If the yuon think they are our friends then they should not plant these poles on a farm.

This is Cambodia led by traitors. The patriots who defend Cambodian territorial integrity get persecuted, while the traitors who help defend foreign interests who encroached our lands still rule Cambodia.

What Rainsy did was to defend Cambodia's interests, so he should be praised, not persecuted.
