Auckland teenagers are being asked to hand over forged IDs to the police or face being arrested.
Police have charged 17-year-old Cambodian student Marcus Lim with forgery after five North Shore students were found to be using fake licences.
An investigation was launched when police on the North Shore checked IDs in licensed premises and recorded an upsurge in fakes.
Detective Sergeant James Watson says police believe hundreds of teenagers from up to 15 schools in the Auckland region may also have them.
"Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds just either wanting to buy alcohol or get into a bar or pub or even concerts. That's their motivation for getting the licence."
Mr Watson says police seized Lim's computer and are now contacting the hundreds of names documented on it. He believes students paid $100 for the forged licences.
Mr Watson says teenagers who have gotten hold of the fake IDs must hand them into police or else they will face being arrested.
