South Korean president, Mr. Lee Myung-bak, is scheduled to visit Cambodia in later October, said Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith.
Mr. Kanharith said Mr. Lee Myung-bak is expected to arrive in Cambodia on 22nd October for a two day visit. He is expected to hold a series of talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen. It is not known what agenda are included in the talks between the two leaders.
Mr. Lee Myung-bak served as Mr. Hun Sen's financial advisor from 2000-2007, a position he held until he was elected South Korea president in December 2007. When Mr. Hun Sen attended Mr. Lee's inaugurationn in February 2008, he extended an invitation to Mr. Lee to pay an official visit to Cambodia in which Mr. Lee accepted but due to his busy schedule the visit was pushed back until this month. South Korea had also pledged $60 million of construction aid during Mr. Hun Sen's visit.
In the last five years, South Korea is the second biggest investor in Cambodia where South Korean businesses had invested about $2.567 billion, second only to Chinese investors who have invested about $6 billion. South Korean investments had superseded American investments which only totalled about $743 million. South Korean businesses are the number one investors in the Cambodian construction industry. South Korea used to be the number source of tourists to Cambodia until Vietnam took over due to a free visa policy.
In 2010, a Cambodian company, Camco Motor Company, will build a $60 million automotive assembly plant to assemble Hyundai cars in Koh Kong province.
Analysts said Mr. Lee's visit will help boost South Korean investments in Cambodia.
