SRP appeals to authority to arrest killers

Source: Khmer Sthapana newspaper
Reported in English by Khmerization

The Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has appealed to police to arrest killers after one of its elected commune councillors was gunned down on 4th September in Staung district in Kampong Thom province.

42 year-old Toch Hourt was gunned down by a lone gunman who escaped on a motorbike riding by an accomplice after the killing.

The SRP said it doesn't know the motives for the murder, but Hourt Bun Hour, Police Inspector of Staung district, said this is "not a political killing but due to personal disputes". However, he said the police does not have any particular suspects in mind yet.

Yim Sovan, spokesman for the SRP, cannot be reached for comment but Ky Vannara, Deputy Secretary-General of the SRP, said the party doesn't know the motives for the killing. The SRP doesn't want to say that the killing is politically motivated because in the past the authority has accused the party of politicising the murders of its party members, he said.

However, he calls for the police to find the killer. And on 5th September, the SRP has issued a statement condemning the killing and also called for the police to arrest the killers.

Quote "Inspector of Staung district said this is "not a political killing but due to personal disputes". However, he said the police does not have any particular suspects in mind yet". How would one make such coment if one does not know the motive of the killing. Please investigate the case properly before jumping into conclusion.

6 September 2009 5:42 PM, I agree. If the police knew it is a personal dispute then they must know who the victim had a dispute with, then would know the killers. On the other hand, if the police doesn't know the suspects, how do they know it is a personal dispute. The police conclusion doesn't make any sense.

They haven't launched an investigation yet, but they already concluded the killing was a result of personal dispute. If it is a personal dispute they could have the suspects by now.

The problems will never be solved if khmers don't end the Society of Impunity. No matter how hard you try, I own the country and I can do whatever I like.

5:58AM, Can I assume you're a Hun Sen/CPP/Hanoi sympathizer. What do you mean by IMPUNITY? Every country in the world has their own issues. Cambodia's issues mainly with the incompetency of Hun Sen, who has little or no understanding on how to run the country in a democratic forms. All he knows are communism and dictatoship. He's a control freak. He likes to be involves with every thing, very much like ah satt Yuon. If peopole truly have choices, Hun Sen and his gangs wouldn't be running the country. He won an election not by the choice of the people but by cheating. Cambodian people can only protest so much before Hun Sen decides to use violence to suppress their expression. Most of the problems in Cambodia can only be solved if Hun Sen-so-well-backed-up-Hanoi CPP is politically eliminated. As long as Hun Sen is in power, you're be reading a lot of comments like mind blaming Hanoi for involvement in Cambodia's internal political affair. Whatever the political negativities of Cambodia, it's ultimately comes down to leadership. If a leader can't lead, step out of the way and make ways for a new leader, but that can't be happening because Hanoi will not let that happen.

Hun Sen has been in powers for more than 30 years and Cambodia is still poor and lawless. It is time to find a leader who can lead Cambodia to a new direction- to bring laws and orders, democracy and the respect of human rights.

To those who think Hun Sen is irreplaceable and that he is the best leader Cambodia has ever had, I ask you to look at the countries around the world that change their leaders every 4 or 5 years. They have prospered impressively and Cambodia, which keep an incompetent and corrupt leader for 30 years, is still poor and backward.
