Cambodian students to study Khmer Rouge

Cambodian students read textbooks about the hardline Khmer Rouge regime at the Hun Sen Ang Snuol high school

Cambodia has agreed to include a text on the Khmer Rouge period of the country's history in its 2009 high school curriculum.

Half a million copies of A History of Democratic Kampuchea are being distributed to schools across the country.

The 100-page text on the rise and fall of the Khmer Rouge has been reviewed by Cambodian and foreign scholars.

It also includes lessons from Nazi and Rwandan genocides.

Up to two million people were killed during the Khmer Rouge years in power in the 1970s, with the regime emptying cities and enslaving the population on collective farms.

The new generations don't know the true faces of Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot. With some small short lessons introducing about the ruthless regime will create curiosity for these students to investigate the deeper side of the whole truth of why Khmer killed Khmer, for what, for who?

If the legacy of the ruthless Khmer Rouge regime is to be taught in school, history of Cambodia and Kampuchea Krom also ought to be included in the lessons. Kampuchea Krom cannot be left out, it's part of Cambodia history. The suffering of any Khmer, is the suffering of all Khmer.

Hun Sen does not want them to know because he and other CPP leaders were former KR. But some KR history have been taught at schools or universities but they were selectively taught.
