Cambodian officials are hopeful that border situations will return to the pre-15th July 2008 event, as there are news that Thailand is also beginning to withdraw troops from the border frontlines after Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen unilaterally ordered the withdrawals of Cambodian troops from disputed border areas.

Thai troops forcibly occupied the Cambodian territories surrounding Preah Vihear temple on 15th July 2008, after Unesco inscribed the temple on 7th July.

Gen. Yim Pim, Cambodian commander of Division 8 based in the border frontlines, was quoted by everyday.com to have said that Thailand had begun to withdraw some troops from the frontlines. He added that the border situations have eased significantly since Mr. Hun Sen's ordered the withdrawals a few days ago.

Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, concurred Gen. Yim Pim's assessments. "According to my general observations, the border situations have really eased and I am optimistic that the situations will return to the pre-15th July 2008 event", he said.

Mr. John Johnson, spokesman for the American Embassy in Phnom Penh, welcomes the troop withdrawals. "I hope it will lead to a peaceful solution, but it is too soon to predict what will happen. But I hope that it is a step that will lead to a good solution", he said.

"The United States is encouraging good bilateral negotiations between Cambodia and Thailand", he added.

However, he said the troop withdrawals are not linked to a visit by Sen. Jim Webb, a special envoy of the U.S government, to Cambodia on 18th of August.

Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, cannot be reached for comments.
