Unconfirmed reports said that a Thai commander has reportedly agreed to return the Preah Vihear borders to the pre-15th July 2008 situations when no Thai troops has occupied any border areas inside Cambodia near the Preah Vihear temple, reports Deum Ampil.
In an eight-hour meeting on 1st July 2009 in O'Smach town in Ouddor Meanchey province with Cambodia's Gen. Chea Morn, commander of Military Region Five, Thai Gen. Wiboolsak Neeparn, Military Region Two, has reportedly agreed to Cambodia's request to return the borders to pre-17th July 2008 situations. However, the Thai commander said that he must wait for a final decision from the Thai Defence Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan.
Thai troops occupied the areas surrounding the Preah Vihear Preah Vihear temple on 15th July 2008 after Unesco decided to inscribe the temple on 7th July 2008. Since then two major armed clashes between Khmer and Thai troops erupted which resulted in at least 7 deaths from both sides.
According to the same sources, in the meeting Gen. Wiboolsak has agreed to redeploy the 10 Thai soldiers stationed at Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvara pagoda, 20 soldiers at Chak Chreng and 30 troops based at Sombok Khmum. This effectively means the return of the border areas to pre-15th July 2008 situations where no Thai troops were stationed on Cambodian soils.
The same sources said that up until the night of 1st July, there is no response from the Thai Defence Minister about the unconfirmed agreement yet.
At the same time, there are reports from Preah Vihear that the Thai military had trucked in 5 more trucks of Thai troops to the areas near Preah Vihear temple and they also began to turn off their lights at night time.
The unconfirmed agreement comes at a time when Prime Minister Hun Sen told a graduation ceremony that he will not abandon Cambodian border issues with Thailand and that he will ask Thailand to withdraw its troops from Cambodian territories whenever he had a meeting with the Thai leaders. In the same speech, Mr. Hun Sen also warned that Cambodia has sufficient weapons to fight against Thai troops. He also warned Thai planes not to fly over the Cambodian air space because Cambodian soldiers are now equipped with anti-aircraft missiles.
