A Thai couple on Monday attempted to enter Khmer territory to visit Preah Vihear temple but they were prevented from doing so by Cambodian soldiers due to security reasons.

According to the Phnom Penh Post, a Thai woman named Sarunya, 38, said that her and her husband were prevented from visiting the temple by Cambodian soldiers. An unnamed Cambodian soldier said his superior told all Cambodian soldiers to not allow any Thai tourists to come and visit the temple. He added that the Cambodian military is afraid that the Thai military may use Thai spies disguised as tourists to spy on the Cambodian military situations.

An unnamed senior Cambodian commander said if Thai tourists come they may cause problems with the Cambodian tourists. He said: "We don't let the Thai tourists come because we are afraid that they may create problems with the Cambodian tourists at Preah Vihear temple."

The same officer said he will allow all tourists from any countries to visit Preah Vihear temple, except the Thai people. He said: "Whoever speaks Thai won't be allowed to visit the temple. They can come to visit the temple only after we have solved all (border) problems."
