Mr. Heng Ratana, director of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) said there are still about 2,000 squared kilometres of lands, specially along the Khmer-Thai borders, which are still mined.

He said Cambodia signed the Anti-Mine Convention on the 1st of January 2000. Under the convention, Cambodia has the obligation to demine all areas within 10 years, starting from 2000 to 2010.

The CMAC director said from 2002 to 2009, CMAC had conducted demining in areas that contained 2.5 million landmines and unexploded ordnaces . He said despite these successes, there are still 2,000 squared kilometres of lands still litter with landmines, with 46% of villages fall victims to landmines.

Mr. Heng Ratana said because Cambodia still face development problems due to landmines, Cambodia has asked the Anti-Mine Convention for an extension of time for mine-clearance another 10 years from 2009 to 2019. He added the Anti-Mine Convention had received Cambodia's request but still awaiting the decision of the Convention's meeting at the end of Novemeber in Colombia.
