Chak Chreng, considered to be Cambodian territory according to the 1904 treaty map, had been occupied by Thai troops since about a month ago. The military situation in the area had increasingly become tense when Cambodia sent the troops to the area after Thailand refused to withdraw their troops from the area.
Cambodian military sources based a Preah Vihear frontline told Deum Ampil at 2.30 pm the 13th of June that the talks between the two generals had started at 8:30 am but had broken down after the Thai commander refused to accept the Cambodian proposal for the troop withdrawals of both Khmer and Thai troops from the area.
