ENLARGEStudents from Nevada City School of the Arts held a fundraiser recently for their class sponsorship of a wheelchair-bound Cambodian student's education.
The 29 seventh-graders of Nevada City School of the Arts are aiding the education of a Cambodian girl as a school project, director Holly Pettit said Monday.
The students have raised $800 so far from a car wash held at the school May 29 and a two-week popsicle sale the last week of May and first week of June.
“It's becoming a tradition in our school,” Pettit added.
This was the second year the seventh-grade class has sponsored Kak Sreimom, a wheelchair-bound girl who is about to begin her final year in high school and plans to continue to college. The sponsorship program is through an organization called Sustainable Cambodia.
David Emery, the uncle of a former student at the school, lives in Cambodia most of the year, but visits family in Nevada City. He spoke to the students about the girl, Pettit said.
