Thai soldiers continue to forbid Khmer farmers from farming their lands in Seila village

Reported by Khmerization

Khmer villagers from Seila village in O'bei Choan of O'Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey claimed that on the afternoon of 3rd May, 3 Thai soldiers armed with two M16 automatic riffles and one home-made gun had come to forbid Khmer farmers from toiling their fields at Seila village, when they had forbidden Khmer farmers once before on 17th March 2009, reports Koh Santepheap.

According to Koh Santepheap, After the villagers reported to them, Border Unit 503 dispatched 12 soldiers to talk with the Thai soldiers. After sseing a lot of Cambodian soldiers those three Thai soldiers did not say anything, only asked to meet again the next day for talks. In the talks the next day, the Thai soldiers request that the Cambodian farmers suspend their works on the "disputed" lands until the higher authorities from both sides resolved the issues.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Thailand and Cambodia in 2000, both sides can continue to work on lands they occupied previously until the border issues are resolved. The Seila villagers claimed that they had occupied they lands since 1993, when the area was still forested.

When this article went to press, there is no news of how the disputes at Seila Village were resolved yet.
