Reactions to Thai refusal of compensation

Source: Radio Free Asia
Reported in English by Khmerization

Khmer politicians and civil societies have reacted angrily to the Thai refusal of a $2.1 million compensation claims lodged by the Cambodian government and civil societies recently for the damages caused by Thai shells during the fighting on 3rd April, 2009.

This is what they said:

"Even if that land is Khmer territory or even if it is a disputed zone, but if Khmer people's life and their properties have been affected, then Thailand has to pay compensation"- Mr. Kem Sokha, president of Human Right Party.

"Because all the signatories (to the 1991 Paris Peace Accords) such as all the superpowers and our neighbours have agreed to guarantee the territorial integrity of Cambodia and now the territorial integrity of Cambodia has been violated, then now it is time for all the countries who have promised to help protect the territorial integrity of Cambodia to come and help. So please come and help."- Mr. Sam Rainsy, president of the Sam Rainsy Party.

"They (Thailand) had used violence by using troops to destroy our people's properties, this is a big mistake that our organisation cannot forgive. We will continue to use our rights as a private citizen, our rights as a civil organisation, and in our solidarity with our government, we will continue to appeal to the world."- Mr. Moeung Son, chairman of the Khmer Civilisation Foundation.

"The shelling of a market located at the staircase of the Preah Vihear temple was not an accident. It was the intention of Thailand to do everything to eliminate the presence of Khmer temple and Khmer villagers along the foot of the Preah Vihear mountain so that they (Thailand) can easily violate Cambodian sovereignty. So, the shelling of a Khmer market by Thai soldiers was premeditated, it was done through military plans such as the calculation of how far the shells can reach and the aiming of the artillery. So it is a premeditated plan to destroy. So, this I can see that it is an unreasonable dirty intention of Thailand toward Cambodia."- Dr. Ros Chantrabotr, vice-rector of the Royal Cambodian Academy.
