Gen. Anupong Paochinda, the Thai Army Chief, escorted by 80 troops from the Suranaree Force, on 19th May visited the border frontline at Sombok Khmum and met with Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodia’s Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Gen. Srey Doek, commander of the Preah Vihear area, reports Deum Ampil.

Gen. Anupong and his other officers had also visited Wat Keo Skha Kirisvarak pagoda, 1st Gopura of the temple and also visited the burnt out market nearby.

According to Deum Ampil, the details of the meeting had been kept secret and it is not clear if the Thai side will agree with Cambodia’s demand for a compensation for the destruction to the market by Thai shells.

Gen. Anupong is the first Thai military leaders to acknowledge the destruction of the market and has said that the Cambodian demand for a compensation “can be settled”.

However, according to Thai media reports, Gen. Anupong has on many occasions insisted that the market and those stalls were built on Thai territory.
