Civil societies have applauded the government's decision to lodge a compensation claim against Thailand for the damages caused by Thai shells during the 2rd April fighting, reports Radio Free Asia.
The Cambodian government had sent a diplomatic note (pictured) to Thailand on 11th May asking for about $2.5 million in compensation for the damages to about 264 stalls belong to Cambodian villagers in Preah Vihear temple.
Mr. Moeung Son, chairman of the Khmer Civilisation Foundation, said: "The official claim lodged by the government is very important because the government had lodged the same claim as we did, but only the compensation amount is different. The compensation amount is not important. What is important is that the government is our top institution, so we will accept this amount. And the important thing is that it has lodged the claim officially."
Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that 264 stalls in the market and 319 cambodian families had been made homeless as a result of the destruction of their homes caused by Thai shells, says RFA.
According to RFA, the Cambodian diplomatic note to Thailand had been sent on 11th May, but Thailand immediately refuted the Cambodia claims.
