Battambang had been ruled by the Aphaiwong family and the Kingdom of Siam for more than 100 years, from 1796 to 1907. In 1907, under the Franco-Siam treaty of 1904, Battambang was returned to Cambodia control, Chhum Aphaiwong being the last lord governor of Battambang.
