Does Cambodia have a chance with Thailand if war breaks out?

Dear readers,

After posting an article about Gen. Kun Kim's warning to Thailand titled "Gen. Kun Kim warned Thai troops not to provoke clashes", some readers have made very interesting comments and visualize a possible scenario if war breaks out between Thailand and Cambodia. Please have a read below:

It is good that a Cambodian general issued a warning to Thailand, but his warning is only rhetoric. Kun Kim must know that when it comes to a full scale war with Thailand, Cambodia won't stand a chance with Thailand as it has 3 times more soldiers than Cambodia, it has more than a hundred times of jet fighters than Cambodia and Thailand has far more modern weapons than Cambodia. But no matter what Cambodia has to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Cambodia has another boss vietnam or thailand or north korea. I don't think when the war is in full scale, Cambodia lost to in the war.
Your idea is absolutely wrong..

It is year 2009. What you think in juggle,, under ground, tank ....something else,
As we know, in cambodia, everything never declare to everbody know.

anything can happened...

I don't support war but if the war is in full scale, Cambodia won't lost to thai 100 %.

Only UNSC can help cambodia.

You are right, only UNSC can help. To go to a full scale war with Thailand is not the option. In a full scale war, Thailand will wipe out Cambodian army with their more than 300 jet fighters very quick if it wants to. Cambodia does not have even one jet fighters.

Just look at these facts:
-Thailand has more than 300,000 well-trained and well-equipped army. Cambodia has less than 140,00 poorly trained and poorly equipped army.

-Thailand has more than 300 jet fighters, Cambodia has none.

-Thailand has more than 300 modern tanks, Cambodia has about 50 old tanks.

-Thailand has a very large fleet of American helicopters equipped with machine guns. Cambodia has none.

-Thailand has very large fleets of warships, Cambodia has a few poorly equipped small vessels bought from China.

-Thailand has modern roads and transport systems where it can move troops very fast with helicopters, planes and trucks, Cambodia has poor and dirt roads, no military planes etc.

With these facts before us, how can Cambodia fight a full scale war with Thailand. So the only option is to go to UNSC, request help from a third party (Asean)or take Thailand to International Court of Justice etc. Bilateral talks will only result in Cambodia losing more territories because Thailand has always employing grandstanding tactic, that is negotiate with the guns pointing at Cambodian's head.

I understand, You should learn from the past. Cambodia alway ask help from " Mo ha mit china " or " Mo ha mit Youn ".

I don't think, thailand come to cambodia easily.

No way... as i told you.

Everything in cambodia never declare... Remember this word

If the war start, vietnam troop change their shirt to be cambodia troop shir. What you think..... ha ha ha ha

Goods discussions. But the last commentator at 16:41 is too optimistic about moha mit chen and yuon. Don't ever dream of China and Vietnam sending their troops to die for nothing in Cambodia. This is 2009, not the cold war of the 1950s,60s and 70s anymore. all countries are doing business with each other, so if it's not their war, they won't fight it. Also Vietnam and China are very good business friends of Thailand as well. The only thing they can do is to mediate the conflict between the two opposing countries only.

You are right, They will do business with cambodia. Get benefit from cambodia.

Look at history. History learn us.
Cambodia alway use this tactic.
Hun Sen will give some oil or mine exploration to them.
Cambodia like that.
Read cambodia history more man !!!

That's why i am optimistic.

Cambodia troop that fighting with thailand troop in Veal antri is Hun Sen's body guard. Hun Sen's body guard is well trained by Vietnam.

Until now, Hun Sen never declare his military equipment under ground his house (Toul krasaing). How many ? Nobody know.

Another view, have you ever talk with that Hun Sen body guard, Are they real khmer? some of them mix khmer-youn. You should learn to listen their khmer speaking more.

In juggle khmer, khmer authority never open for media to see, how many military equipment they have. It alway hide from report.

Look at thai troop, they introduce their moder military equipment on border to cambodia side.

I understand your view, Thailand has alot of equipment.

In this world, anything can happened. We don't know !!!!

Khmers have no modern weapons, but they have the experience and the will to fight. Thai troops have modern weapons, but no experience and no will to fight. But Cambodia has less in everything than Thailand, troops and weapons. All and all, Cambodia is the underdog.

There won't be war. If you just look at it with knowledge of why this situation came to be in the first place, you know war isn't gonna happen. There might be small clashes but a full scale war won't happen. That, I can guarantee you. What is there to be gained for Thailand or Cambodia for that matter for a war?

War is basically conducted to steal shit from another country. There has to be something to be gained in order to go to war. This is 21th century and both countries are part of the same international communities. If something serious happens, it'll be over in less than a week and everyone has to go back to where they come from.

FYI, Thailand doesn't have the same relation with the US anymore. Their tie seems to be fading away as Thailand is pursuing Chinese policy more, which goes the opposite direction of the US. China is spreading its influence in the Asia region and the US is losing ground. The US is actually looking to Indonesia as its next puppet in the region in a move to counter Chinese naval power.

So maybe this move by the US to lessen its tie with Thailand would benefit Khmer more. Thailand is looking to China as its main backer now. I don't who Cambodia is looking for a main backer today.

Cambodia tried to have main backers from both sides and we got fucked up because Lon Nol was a fucking moron to shift our neutral standing and jump the US wagon and go us into the war and subsequently the Khmer Rouge rule and fucked big time

4:53, great analysis. I agreed with every aspect of your rationale. Full scale war between Cambodia and Thailand will never happen because, as you put it, this is 21st century and no one will gain from this war. Small scale war, yes. I also agreed with you that the US does not have the same relationships with Thailand as it used to have during the cold war, because during that time America wants to use Thailand as a buffer zone between communist countries and the free world. US wanted to tackle the spread of communism when it went to war with Vietnam but it lost the war so the last American ally in the region would be Thailand.

It is true that America is turning toward Indonesia as its puppet-ally because now the American strategic policy had shifted from the cold war or ideological war to the war against global terrorism.

Back to the point, because Thailand has the military supremacy over Cambodia it will always bully Cambodia over border issues. It will always encroach on Cambodian borders, I mean.

There will not be a full scal war between Thailand and Cambodia; the first reason, in six more
years the ASEAN 10 countries become like European Union style people can travel free, getting permanence residence. The second reason, the Thais military
leader were very old, theirs age range between 65- 88 years old. The third reason, cambodian has underground military that makes Thailand worries.

To all aspects, war between Cambodia and Thailand will never happen. Related to the temple dispute, it is caused due to some political opportunity that Thailand would have gained.
We have our head machine, the United Nations, who will provide any thing to solve the dispute.
War is never be good. Rather make peace than declare a large scale of war.
