Cambodia on the morning of 4th April had sent letters to Unesco and the signatories of the 1973 convention protesting the damages to Preah Vihear temple caused by Thai troops during the fighting on 3rd April, reports Deum Ampil newspaper.

Mr. Sok An, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of the Council of Ministers, sent the letters to the director of Unesco and many countries that signed the 1973 convention.

Mr. Sok An's letter detailed that Thai troops had deliberately shot at the temple staircases which caused damages to the staircases and burnt down a market and the headquarter of the Preah Vihear Authority located nearby.

In the letters, the Minister had also appealed to Unesco and the countries that signed the 1973 convention to immediately help protect Preah Vihear temple which has become a world heritage site since July 2008.
