The Ministry of Commerce said that among Cambodia’s 138 trading partners, 130 countries had imported products from Cambodia, but actually Cambodia did not earn much foreign incomes from the exports, reports Khmer Sthapana newspaper.
The paper cited a report from the Ministry of Commerce which stated that in 2008, Cambodia had signed trade agreements with 138 countries, compared to the 2007’s figures when Cambodia had only 126 trading partners.
The Ministry’s report also said that, although Cambodia had exported more products to more countries than the previous years, the real values of export incomes had not actually increased.
According to the report of the Ministry of Commerce, some countries had only imported as little as $US170 (one hundred and seventy dollars) worth of Cambodian products.
The countries that imported the least from Cambodia in 2008 are: Cameroon ($170), Libya ($190), Ethiopia ($350), Georgia ($1118) and Iceland ($1338).
These very embarrassing export figures had attracted sharp criticism from the Cambodian opposition parties.
Mr. Kem Sokha, leader of the opposition Human Right Party, said that these embarrassing figures are the results of the incompetence of the government and the Commerce Ministry who failed to make efforts to attract trades from other countries. He said that the figures, which show an increase in the numbers of trading partners but a decrease in real export incomes, show that the government is incompetent in finding lucrative markets for Cambodian products, reports Khmer Sthapana.
According to the 2008’s figures, Cambodia had exported $US3,300 million worth of products to overseas markets. The United States was the single biggest importer of Cambodian products which were worth more than $US2000 million, mainly textile products, says Khmer Sthapana.
