Cambodian rubber exports down by 15 pc: Official

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia's rubber exports dropped by 15.2 percent in 2008 compared with the previous year, due to falling demand and fierce competition, said English- language daily newspaper the Phnom Penh Post on Tuesday.

In addition, domestic plantation was disappointing, which contributed to the downturn, too, said Ly Phalla, director of the General Directorate of Rubber Plantation.

Cambodia exported about 36,000 tons of latex rubber resin at an estimated value of 43.2 million U.S. dollars last year, a 15.2 percent down from 2007, he said.

There are 108,000 hectares of rubber trees in Cambodia and only 34,000 of them can be tapped for resin, he added.

The main market for Cambodian rubber are Malaysia, Vietnam and China.
