Thai commander apologised because one of his soldiers stepped on Cambodian land mines

The Thai commander has apologised to Khmer soldiers because a Thai soldier stepped on old land mine at Damrey Trom Pass and has sprayed one magazine of bullets to the air to call for rescue.

Col. Neak Vong, Cambodian deputy commander of Battalion 42 based in Oddor Meanchey province told Reaksmei Kampuchea that on 27th January a commander of the Thai Battalion 26 based at Ta Moan Thom temple has apologised to Cambodian troops because one of his soldiers has stepped on old land mines and has discharged one magazine of bullets into the air. The accident happened at 1:2o in the afternoon on 26th January on top of Dangrek Mountain at Damrey Trom Pass, 500 metres northwest of Ta Moan Thom temple.

The Thai commander told the Cambodian commander that one of his soldiers stepped on old land mines which has severed both of his legs. Due to pain, the injured soldier has sprayed one magazine of bullets into the air, aiming toward the Thai military camp to ask for help. The Thai commander added that the shooting was not intended to threaten the Cambodian soldiers.

Col. Neak Vong said that, the exploded mine was an old mine left there from the Cambodian civil war. He said that the wounded Thai soldiers has slipped into Cambodian territory with the intention of spying on the Cambodian troops based in the area.
