Banteay Meanchey- Immigration officials at the border checkpoint of Poipet said that, in the last 3-4 days, there were an increase in the numbers of foreign tourists crossing from Thailand into Cambodia through Poipet Checkpoint from 500 to 1,000 tourists per day. These increases in the numbers of tourist arrivals through Poipet were due to the political turmoil in Thailand as anti-government protesters shut down all Thailand’s international airports.

Due to the shutdown of all Thai airports, all flights to Siem Reap have been cancelled and all tourists have to cross into Cambodia through Poipet.

An immigration official at the Poipet International Checkpoint said that in the last 2-3 days, tourist arrivals through Poipet have increased to 1,000 per day. He added that, before the political turmoil in Thailand, tourist arrivals through Poipet were only 500 tourists per day.

Mr. Chung Lem, director of the Banteay Meanchey Tourist Bureau, confirmed that the increase in tourist arrivals through Poipet were the results of political crisis and the shutting down of Thailand’s international airports.//
