There are reports that the Funcinpec Party wants to merge with the Norodom Ranariddh Party in order to maximise the electoral chances of the royalist party in the upcoming commune and provincial elections which will be held in May 2009.
Mr. Nhiek Bunchhay (pictured), Secretary-General of the Funcinpec Party, told the Cambodia Daily that party's members are exploring ways to form an alliance with the Norodom Ranariddh Party in order to maximise the electoral votes in the upcoming commune, district and provincial elections.
Mr. Nhiek Bunchhay has told the Cambodia Daily by telephone on Sunday that the Funcinpec Party wanted to unite with the Norodom Ranaridhh Party which he said he has no objection to this unity. Mr. Nhiek Bunchhay said that both parties will benefit from the unity.
Mr. Lu Laysreng, First Vice-President of the Funcinpec Party, said that it is right for both parties to unite, but said that this unity will yield little benefit because Prince Ranariddh has already resigned from the Norodom Ranaridhh Party.//
