Globetrotting Gourmet® and asianfoodtours.com toast in the New Year along Asia's longest river, during their next gastronomic adventure to Southeast Asia. Their upcoming Mekong Epicure tour runs from Dec. 29 '08 to Jan 13 '09, taking in lands along the mighty Mekong River in Southeast Asia.
Hosted by cookbook author Robert Carmack and textile designer Morrison Polkinghorne, each Globetrotting Gourmet is unique, appealing equally to the food lover, traveler and cook. But you do not have to be a chef to partake: If you love to eat, and eat to love, this is the tour for you.
After meeting in Bangkok, the tour flies to Pakse in Laos, staying at La Folie Lodge on bucolic Done Deang island. This brand new property faces the former royal capital Champasak, now a sleepy village on the mainland, and the magnificent Khmer ruins of Wat Phou. Flying Bangkok Airways ("Asia's boutique airline"), the tour then travels to Siem Reap viewing ancient Angkor temples over four days, then to Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh and its rich architecture of Deco-era buildings. Highlights include market tours to identity local foods; cooking classes and demonstrations sprinkled throughout; plus a festive New Year's banquet, and a final night's gala degustation menu at trendy Quay hotel in Phnom Penh, FCC's latest property. In Siem Reap the group dines at celebrity chef Didier Corlou's newest restaurant, l'Escale des Arts & des Sens.
A second tour begins immediately afterwards, to Vietnam's Delta region and idyllic Phu Quoc island, home to Asia's best fish sauce, and producer of the world's top peppercorns (creating new competition to Cambodia's prized Kampot meric). Globetrotting Gourmet's Vietnam tour uses Accor properties exclusively: Sofitel Plaza in Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon, and La Veranda Grand Mercure on Phu Quoc.
As Globetrotting Gourmet® is committed to sustainable tourism and responsible travel, tourism dollars are spread to local communities, not just to large, foreign-owned consortiums.
Additionally, meals and cooking classes are regularly scheduled at top-quality NGO training hotels and restaurants, ensuring the next generation of Lao, Khmer and Vietnamese learn skills for future employment. A portion of all proceeds are also donated to local causes after each tour.
Robert and Morrison's next Globetrotting Gourmet® Mekong Epicure FoodTOUR runs Dec. 29- Jan. 13. Offered separately or combined, the first tour to Laos, Cambodia and Thailand runs Dec. 29 to Jan 8, and the 6-day Vietnam Delta tour immediately follows, to Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon and Phu Quoc island from 8-13 Jan.
