Cambodia approves building of two Chinese dams

Cambodia has approved two large hydropower dams to be built with funding from Chinese companies.

The two dams would be built in the southwestern province of Koh Kong.

China National Heavy Machinery Corporation will spend 540 million dollars to build Stung Tatay dam which will generate 246 megawatts of power.

China's Michelle Corporation will spend 496 million dollars to build Stung Russey Chrum Krom dam, which will generate 338 megawatts of electricity.

Approving the construction of the dams the cabinet said they were necessary for economic development.

Cambodia plans to open nine other dams between2010 1nd 2019 to generate over one thousand 900 megawatts of power.
